Gender-based domestic violence is a pervasive global issue, resulting in both immediate and long-term physical and psychological harm to individuals. It is increasingly recognized not only as a violation of human rights but also as a significant public health concern. In Bangladesh, one of the third world developing & arguably world's poorest countries, the prevalence of domestic violence poses serious challenges, with a substantial number of victims affected. The People's Republic of Bangladesh has been obligated through International commitments to protect it's individuals from gender-based violence through various treaties, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women (DEVAW).
Moreover,The Domestic Violence Protection and Prevention Act, 2010, Bangladesh, was enacted to combat domestic violence.
