Borderlands Dynamics in Africa: Security Challenges and the Labours of Mitigation

This edited volume explores the complex dynamics of borderlands in Africa, delving into the security challenges and mitigation strategies employed in these regions. Through 15 chapters contributed by various African scholars from sub-Saharan Africa, the book is naturally divided into four sections and provides a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the historical, geographical, political, economic, and social factors that shape borderland dynamics in Africa. From the legacies of colonialism to contemporary issues of terrorism, cross-border migration and crimes, arms trafficking, refugee questions, and identity, the book examines the multifaceted security challenges confronting Africa’s borderlands. The contributors also highlight the labours of mitigation, including local initiatives, regional cooperation, and international interventions, that aim to address these challenges.
